What is your currency?

Hello friends! It is Day 13 of NanPoWriMo with our gracious host Nancy Lyneé Woo. One of this morning’s questions was the title of this post. It was actually perfect because ever since Easter weekend (just past), I’ve been praying for two things – to be endowed with inspirational content, and also to write more poetry about Jesus.

I’m not sure why the thought of writing about him intimidates me. Maybe I feel overwhelmed with the need to make it too perfect. At any rate, as soon as Nancy asked that question, I knew Jesus was the answer for me that stood out above all others.

If you know me, you know that I have pretty much always suffered from anxiety. This I share with millions of other people worldwide. In my observations, it’s a pretty common human condition. I’ve lived with depression and PTSD, and if you know me well, you also know that I’ve been suicidal – especially in my youth while trying to care for and navigate the delusions of a mentally ill parent. So, please believe: It is the 100-percent truth when I say if I did not know how to rely on Jesus, I would not be alive today. (And if you’re asking, just how did I learn to do that? – I will write a post on the topic for next time.)

I was delighted to have the inspiration to write this poem from today’s prompt. May you derive some peace and light from it today.

Currency

My currency is
Jesus; the energy He gives.
Without Him, I can neither buy
nor sell Life.

When I get up in the morning,
I trade my emptiness asking him to take
this shell and fill it with enough
Light, Love, and Peace to pass
around today –

so much that when
I walk, even a soft subtle step will jar
it loose, send it spiraling out at all
angles- the sides,
the front, the rear, the corners.

Once a projectile
of promise like that has been launched,
it has no choice but to find a target; to never
rest until it has embedded his smile.
