Yes, I see a therapist

My Therapist

First time I walked into a therapy office,
I was all clammy hands and so many
butterflies I could feel them
bumping into each other.

In my house, therapists were regarded as a type of demon
that took possession of people’s minds,
had children snatched from their homes,
subjected patients to imprisonment and torture.

But Abby doesn’t bite,
or put me under evil spells. What she does
is help me climb out of hell
and see my life through a filter other
than brimstone smoke.

~from The Locust Years by Kelly Hanwright (soon to be released)

I’ll share the backstory of my journey to getting help next time. Meanwhile, if you’re struggling but have been to afraid to try therapy or think it won’t work for you, let me encourage you: I was that way too. So much depends on finding the right therapist for you. My quality of life has drastically improved since I embraced therapy because there are many times I just can’t get out of my own head. That is when I need someone who can remind me how to ground myself, focus, reset my mindset and get back on track. A therapist who is just right for you is out there, I promise. Don’t give up.
