I have needed this year’s NaPoWriMo like no other. Here’s a poem I thought might resonate with you, or even help if you are a recovering perfectionist like me!
Art as Teacher
Art teaches me that things don’t have to be perfect,
or symmetrical
or follow a same pattern.
Art teaches me mistakes
can be beautiful;
that things aren’t ruined just because i
“messed them up.”
Art teaches me I don’t have to
get it right the first time;
that throwing something on canvas
and figuring it out as I go along can be a wonderful
adventure leading someplace powerful,
or even just FUN!
Art teaches me fun
has value, and it’s okay to just
roll with it.
Art teaches me that things can be painted over,
flaws can show through,
and others will find meaning and value that I
might have removed by overthinking.
Art teaches me to celebrate Life;
to take the journey as it comes.
You are a beautiful work of art in progress, Kelly.
We dab our life’s paintbrush
into the pot of “current moment”,
not knowing
If the color we intend,
Will be
Happy orange or dulbrum blue.
But we can’t freeze and fret over
What we might get.
We dip our brush
And apply our first of many
Strokes of paint
Up, down, swirling around,
All day long,
Until
We expose our canvas
To the light
Of our own eyes
And hearts,
Especially our hearts.
Sometimes what we see
Feels like nothing more than farts,
And a waste of time.
And that is really just plain fine
Because without
an occasional forty art
We won’t know how beautiful
Most of our life
really is.
So, go ahead.
Plunge your brush
Into the pot
Of “current moment”
And stroke the canvas
Of your day
With unrestricted abandon.
How beautiful, Mushroom! Thank you so much, my friend. 💚
